Let Us Make Cake, The New Museum

Let Us Make Cake is a collaborative projection created expressly for the façade of the New Museum. Dozens of artists were asked to interact with scale models of the New Museum ranging in size from 11 inches to 11 feet, embracing the museum as both a canvas and vessel. The resulting footage is projection-mapped onto the museum, marking the first time projection has been used to animate the entire 174-foot facade and rendering the artist’s hand monumental on this downtown landmark.

Musical Performance

Four drummers representing the four seasons create layers of percussion which cycle through to a return to the “rhythm of spring.” The performance will occur at 8pm within a geometric structure that evokes the hallowed architecture and motions of a modern ritual, drawing onlookers into a communal celebration of the heterogeneous city.

Conjoined LED lights form grids of mesh that will form an interactive sheet of light that responds to wind. This theatrical, inviting installation hangs in front of a empty lot, creating an organic, moon-like glow that reinvigorates its stark environment.

Consisting of hundreds of sheets of mirror and steel lit with theatrical lights, this installation creates both a reflection and an illusion of its surroundings. This multifacited surface serves as a membrane for tactile communication between pedestrians, physically representing the often invisible exchanges between strangers.

Star Geode is an outdoor light sculpture that takes the form of a glowing celestial crystal, temporarily placed on earth. Pulsing with radiant optical patterns, it’s color coded communication signals are left to the viewer to be deciphered.

polyp.lux is a gravity driven canopy that provides an atmospheric entrance to the courtyard of St Patricks Catholic School. The skin extends from the form creating a field of light that interacts with the changing environment. Visitors are invited to participate allowing polyp.lux to be in a constant state of flux.

An Apology

The technical difficulties were very unfortunate and prevented the performance from happening.  What was seen at Nuit Blanche’s Flashlight was not an articulation of Rashaad Newsome’s work but instead a random mismatch of elements from an exciting performance that will be re-staged in the near future.  Marlborough Chelsea will provide details when they are available.  Nuit Blanche apologizes for those who were disappointed.

It included a collaborative projection project “Let Us Make Cake” on the New Museum facade, 3D projections and performances on and inside St. Patrick’s Old Cathedral; and a series of site-specific installations along Mulberry Street. The event represented a new platform for artists working in light, sound, performance and projection art to transform an iconic New York City neighborhood into a spectacular nighttime environment of temporary, site-specific public art.

 

An initiative of Nuit Blanche New York, Flash:Light was a featured project of the New Museum’s Festival of Ideas for the New City, a bold initiative for artists, urbanists and activists to exchange ideas, propose solutions and improve urban life.

In preparation for Flash:Light, eighteen artists engaged in four half-day workshops around the themes of the Festival of Ideas – the reconfigured, the networked, the heterogeneous and the sustainable city. Artists debated the role of spectacle in public art,the influence of the New Museum on its surroundings, notions of sustainability for working artists, the legacy of the Situationist International in contemporary interventionist art, and how to interact with the Nolita neighborhood. The result is showcased through new works that advocate for a more imaginative public realm.

 

Nuit Blanche New York specializes in supporting artists working in light, sound and projection to produce nighttime public art events that engage creative communities. It was founded in the summer of 2010 by a handful of artists working in film, urban planning, music, curation and product design who share a passion for transforming the way we experience urban space. In October 2010, the
organization produced Bring to Light, New York City’s first Nuit Blanche that transformed the industrial waterfront of Greenpoint, Brooklyn for thousands of visitors: www.bringtolightnyc.org.

Civilization, a groundbreaking video installation by Marco Brambilla, is presented for the first time in 3D, creating an engrossing experience inside the historic St. Patrick’s Old Cathedral. Weaving together nearly 500 looping video clips, Civilization presents a boldly reinterpreted tableau of Dante’s Divine Comedy echoing stained glass window imagery.

12:00 Rashaad Newsome – Herald

A performance, a ritual and a document, Herald marks the second of Newsome’s four-part series in which the artist pursues the status of King of Arms. Upon being knighted, Newsome assumes the alter to conduct a haunting musical performance, juxtaposing hip-hop culture with religious space and featuring the church’s choir and organ, while a video collage is projected overhead.

One of the fundamental elements of musical counterpoint is the idea that movement from one chord to another is facilitated by the presence of some of the same material in both chords. Common Tones explores this idea using a limited amount of information deployed slowly over the course a performance. The structured improvisation will be performed by Basilica Music Director, Jared Lamenzo.

12:40 Mudboy – Night Eyes (Second Movement)

The performance is an excerpt from the 4 part musical work “Night Eyes” originally performed by Raphael Lyon and Peter Schuette at the ISEA 2010 in Dortmund Germany. The composition, formed with the logic of the double and within a series of nightly visions, is predicated on the 1984 meditation on dream states known as Nightmare on Elm Street. The full piece will be released by Weird Forest later this year and available at www.mudboymusic.com

1:00 Matt Marble – Way Up in the Middle of the Air

Way up is a work of scored improvisation for organ + ensemble (trb, bsn, acc, 2 b., & prepared synth). Inspired by Ezekiel’s fantastic vision in the Old Testament, wherein he sees 4-headed cherubs tied to crystalline gyroscopes, all supporting the glass throne of a divine chariot… way up is a sonic meditation on the vehicle of ascension. Simply put: Dream on & Levitate.

1:20 Pilottone – Flash:Remix

Pilottone will present a performance and intervention in which the group will stage and remix an interactive display as they repurpose sounds collected earlier in the evening during the Festival of Ideas.

This highly-choreographed short video from Dutch artist van der Werve investigates nihilism and a quirky vision of salvation utilizing dry visual humor. The loop video depicts the artist experiencing a devastating accident, followed by a group of emergency-personnel-turned ballerinas who perform while the artist lies in the background.

A pair of twins wandering the Festival of Ideas serve as a conduit for information as they document and transmit their experience via a live feed to a monitor in St.Patrick’s Old Cathedral and Salon 94’s outdoor LED screen. Contemporizing the vampire twins prevalent in Jean Rollin’s films, the twins’ torches are replaced by iPhones in a reflection upon the role of technology and social networks in the new city.

Consisting of two rear-projected videos accompanied by a pair of benches, Walk On By depicts a public garden in which solitary actions such as reading, eating, feeding birds and sleeping are performed. Proportionally scaled, the viewer becomes a participant by paralleling the onscreen vignettes.
